GM Compares Weight of Midsize Truck with Full-Size Models

Edward A. SanchezMar 13, 2014
The truck segment has become so competitive and cutthroat, that any perceived competitive advantage is touted loud and proud, even if some might argue you're comparing apples and oranges. Some observers might see that as being the case with General Motors' announcement about the weight of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado midsize truck.
In the release, GM lists the weight of the 2015 Colorado short box crew cab V-6 4x4 model as 4329 pounds. It goes on to list the curb weights of comparably configured full-size models, some of which are up to 1400 pounds heavier. But conspicuously absent from the list are the weights of the comparable midsize models the Colorado and its sibling GMC Canyon will be facing when they roll into showrooms later this year. After doing a little digging, we learned the new GM midsizers will split the difference between the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier in terms of weight. A comparably configured Tacoma V-6 automatic tips the scales at 4220 pounds and a comparable Nissan Frontier comes in at 4548 pounds. This makes the Colorado 109 pounds heavier than the Tacoma, but 219 pounds lighter than the Nissan. So GM won't be able to claim the featherweight title for the class, but neither will it qualify as morbidly obese.
GM is facing the awkward scenario of its new midsize trucks coming to market around the same time as the 2015 Ford F-150, a truck hailed by many as revolutionary for its nearly all-aluminum body. Personally, we don't see what the big deal is, as we view the two trucks appealing to different buyers, with possibly a little cross-shopping on the lower end of the F-150 range and the mid-to-high range Colorado and Canyon models. What do you think? Should GM be concerned about the F-150 stealing the Colorado’s and Canyon's thunder, or should it focus on taking on its more direct rivals from Toyota and Nissan?
