Caught! 2015 Kia Sorento Testing

Longer Wheelbase To Address Third-Row Space Issues

Mar 3, 2014
Kia has been hammer down with its product updates lately; and, as has been the case with its sister brand Hyundai, the Korean automaker is quick to respond to customer complaints about certain issues. Although the Sorento received a comprehensive redesign for the 2014 model year, we were left puzzled as to why it didn't take the opportunity to move the three-row SUV onto the long-wheelbase platform of the Hyundai (non-Sport) Santa Fe.

Based on these spy shots, it looks like Kia could be moving quickly to rectify the lack of rear-seat room on the Sorento with an upcoming refresh. In addition to more room, the update looks like it will bring the Sorento closer in-step with the brand's overall styling language, with a more upright, prominent "Tiger Nose" grille. The 2014 Sorento was a significantly updated model, externally, but it looked little-changed from its predecessor.
Under the hood, we expect the current 2.4-liter I-4 and 3.3-liter GDI V-6 engines to carry over, with the possible addition of the 2.0-liter GDI turbo used on the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. It remains to be seen if the longer-wheelbase model will supplant the shorter-wheelbase Sorento or will follow the Hyundai Santa Fe in offering both short-wheelbase, five-passenger and long-wheelbase, seven-passenger configurations. The U.S.-spec Sorento is currently built in Georgia, along with the Santa Fe Sport, whereas the long-wheelbase Santa Fe is imported from Korea.
