Confirmed: Lexus NX Compact SUV Coming Soon

Edgy, Sub-RX Crossover To Debut in China

Edward A. SanchezMar 6, 2014
Surprising absolutely nobody, Lexus this week officially confirmed that a production model inspired by the LF-NX concept will be headed to Lexus showrooms worldwide soon, and will make its official debut at the 2014 Beijing International Auto Show next month. The Lexus NX will bring the total Lexus SUV count to four and, like many other smaller SUVs introduced by premium brands, has the potential to become the brand's best-selling model, a distinction currently held by the RX midsize crossover.
The LF-NX concept featured a hybrid powertrain, a configuration that is expected to survive intact in the production model. But the hybrid may not be the only option. A turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 is expected to supplement the lineup for those seeking a sportier driving dynamic.
The overtly edgy styling of the LF-NX concept is expected to be toned down somewhat for the production version, but Lexus has been much more adventurous with its design lately, as evidenced by the 2014 IS sedan, and the IS-based RC coupe. The styling of the showroom-bound compact crossover should still be packing plenty of attitude. The choice of Beijing as the global debut location reflects the increasingly important role emerging markets play in the global automotive landscape. China, Brazil, and other nations have a large and growing number of newly wealthy households eager to showcase their status to the world, and automakers are more than happy to oblige.
