2014 GMC Sierra Optional Vibrating Seat Keeps Drivers Attentive
System More Effective than Audible Alerts, GM Claims
Utilizing a technology that first debuted on the 2013 Cadillac XTS luxury sedan, the 2014 GMC Sierra will offer an optional Safety Alert Seat that warns the driver about potential obstacles to the side and the front of the vehicle when it's in motion.
The system consists of vibrating modules in the right and left bolsters of the seat bottom cushion. If the Lane Departure Warning system camera detects that the vehicle is veering out of its lane, the respective bolster will vibrate on the side in the direction the vehicle is heading. For example, if the truck is veering right, the right bolster will vibrate, and if it's veering left, the left bolster will vibrate.
If a potential forward collision is detected, both bolsters will vibrate, in addition to an audible alert. In testing, GM found that the tactile sensation produced by the seat vibrators was more effective than audible or visual alerts alone. The system can be deactivated by the driver if desired.
The Safety Alert Seat is in addition to other available safety technologies on the 2014 Sierra such as a rear vision camera, park assist, trailer sway control, and an integrated trailer brake controller.
