Famous car collection coming up for auction
March 26, 2008
Some of America's finest vintage cars are about to go on the block. Joe MacPherson, a legend of California car-culture for over fifty years who helped pioneer the idea of auto malls, sadly passed away early last year at age 78. Well-known for his business acumen, involvement in racing and charitable contributions, MacPherson also amassed one of the greatest car collections in the country, spanning nearly the entire twentieth century. Housed for years in an Orange County museum called Joe's Garage, the cars are scheduled be put up for auction this summer.
Famed auction house RM will present the Joe MacPherson Collection in a single-day event featuring fifty vintage cars, twenty-five historic motorcycles, and selected memorabilia. RM describes MacPherson's collection as "the best of the very best," and pieces range from mid-century cars in showroom condition to vintage racers and custom jobs -- everything from a 1911 Pierce-Arrow motorbike to a V12 '32 Ford Hot Rod, even two perfect '54 Corvettes. The collection also includes many famous cars from racing history, including the 1925 Miller 122 Supercharged, Dale Earnhardt's 1994 Chevy Lumina, and a 2000 Toyota Indy Car.
RM is holding the auction on June 14 at Joe's Garage in Tustin, CA. Admission is limited to catalog holders, who can bring one guest, and catalogs are available for $80. For more info check out http://www.rmauctions.com/. RM is offering all the cars without reserve, but considering the collection's quality don't expect to find many bargains.
