Pioneering Pontiac Sport Truck named "G8 ST"
August 20, 2008
Naming Pontiac's new sport truck took a Tame the Name promotion with more than 18,000 submissions, and the final decision couldn't have been made any easier. In place of sentimental favorites such as "El Camino," due to the truck's resemblance, the final decision rested on naming Pontiac's sport truck the "G8 ST."
The Tame the Name promotion ended with thousands of fans having submitted their choices, delaying the final naming announcement for the Pontiac truck for trademark reasons. Craig Bierley, BPG product marketing director for cars and crossovers, expressed his opinions on the promotion and the El Camino naming possibility: "Frankly, we were blown away by the volume and quality of the names that were submitted. 'G8 ST' was one of the most popular suggestions, plus we noticed a far broader trend toward simple, easy-to-remember names. We actually thought very long about El Camino. In the end, we felt it was more appropriate to honor the El Camino's unique place as a part of Chevy's heritage and not use that nameplate on a Pontiac."
The 2010 Pontiac G8 ST will be released in late 2009 and will create a bridge between the sports car and truck realms with its high-performing attributes and cargo-hauling and towing capabilities. The truck will carry the same 361-hp V-8 as the Pontiac G8 GT sedan, while containing a 73.9-in. cargo bed with 42.7 cu ft of cargo space. Payload is rated at 1000 lb and the sport truck will be able to tow 3500 lb.
The G8 ST will achieve a 0-60 time of 5.4 sec while offering better gas mileage due to its Active Fuel Management system and six-speed automatic transmission. Pricing will be available later this year.
