BMW's latest foray into the newly forged premium compact crossover segment is its 1 Series based SUV, called the Concept X1. The concept is slated to be revealed at tomorrow's Paris Motor Show where it will join the rest of the German brand's 'X' designated Sports Activity Vehicles.

Essentially a shrunken X3, the Concept X1 sports the usual design language typical of BMW current SUVs. The stylists have used six distinct contour lines that begin up front beside each of the prominent kidney grilles. The lines make their ways on top of the sculpted bood and continue along the sides of the X1 through the door handles. Flanking the grilles are the standard dual round headlights cut off at the top by white colored horizontal "eyelids". To the rear of the concept is BMW's traditional "Hofmeister Kink" D-pillar contour swing and revised L-contour taillights. The rear light design features LED tubes that are said to greatly accentuate the small car's width and sportiness. A raked low rear window adds to the small crossover's performance-minded design as well.
Overall, the concept was built with a 175.5 in. length, 70.4 in. width, 60.4 in. height, and 104.4 in. wheelbase. Compared to the bigger X3, the Concept X1 is 4.3 in. shorter, 2.6 in. skinnier, 5.5 in. squatter and has a 5.6 in. shorter wheelbase.
According BMW officials, the Concept X1 is roughly one year away from being produced, right in line with our previous guesses. What exact engines will be shoehorned under the production models hood has yet to be disclosed, but considering its 1 Series roots, the X1 will likely employ the small car's 230-hp 3.0L inline-six and twin turbo four-cylinder diesel making 204 hp. BMW's X-Drive all-wheel-drive system will also make its way onto the baby SUV, as will a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox.
Stay tuned for more info and pics from the show floors at Paris in the coming days.
