IIHS Releases Top Safety Pick Winners

November 25, 2008

Carlos LagoNov 25, 2008
The cars of today are safer than ever, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's list of Top Safety Pick winners. The award designates that the vehicle tested excels in protecting occupants in the event of front, side, and rear collisions.
The Top Pick list contains 72 vehicles, more than ever before. The IIHS attributes this to the abundance of standard safety features, including stability control and side airbags.

Notable absences from the list include the Smart Fortwo -- the institute claims the vehicle has inadequate head restraints -- and the Toyota Prius, which lacked satisfactory rear crash protection. Not one product from Chrysler was deemed a top-pick; according to the institute, the Avenger, Sebring, Grand Caravan and Town & Country came close, but each lacked proper head restraint design.
Honda, Acura and Subaru, on the other hand, took a win in every class. Just about every car from the lineup of these three manufacturers was deemed a top pick.
