First Official Photos of the Acura Crossover Hit Web
March 16, 2009
More teaser photos have gone public today of Acura's swoopy new crossover - a vehicle said to have the likes of BMW's X6 and Infiniti's FX series square in its sights. Slated as a midground model between its compact RDX and larger MDX SUVs, the images seen here show that, at least style-wise, the new crossover is certainly looking to barge its way into what BMW calls the Sports Activity Coupe niche.
The rear roofline says it all - it's got a sharply raked profile that has "X6" written all over it. Other styling cues piqued our interest - notably the bulging rear fenders, what appear to be integrated rear door handles, and a small lip spoiler at the trailing edge of the rear hatch. We lightened these photos slightly to try to eek a bit more detail out of them, but not much more was to be had, unfortunately.
Under the hood, we'd expect to see the 3.7-liter V-6 - an engine that shares duty in both the TL sedan and MDX crossover. With 306 horsepower and 274 lb-ft on tap, the new crossover should be able to scoot along with its competition. Add Acura's SH-AWD setup, and Acura could have a convincing crossover on its hands.
We last saw Acura's X6-fighter when it was spotted doing some testing on public roads. Back then, it was wearing some clunky camouflage that masked its arching lines, making it fail to appear anything like competition for Munich. Still, the BMW X6 spotted in direct company gave away the vehicle's true identity.
How a premium, sporty crossover will fare in uncertain economic times remains to be seen. Still, if Acura can offer a driving experience to rival its competitors - and come in at a price point that's a few grand less - that may be just what cash-strapped consumers are looking for.
