Kia Reveals Sorento and New European Cee'd Ahead of Frankfurt

After months of teasing, we've finally gotten a clear look at the new Kia Cee'd, now that the Korean automaker has dropped some official photos ahead of the car's debut in Frankfurt, where it will be joined by the already-revealed-but-not-on-the-road-yet next-generation Kia Sorento.
We got our first look at the new Cee'd back in June when it was spotted running around Europe covered in camouflage. Last month, Kia dropped a darkened teaser to really whet our appetites, and now we finally have a look at the complete new car. Kia has updated both the inside and exterior of the Cee'd, its best-selling model in Europe, to bring it inline with the company's latest offerings.

"The new Cee'd is 25 mm longer and is more distinctive in appearance with a stronger road presence," Kia Motors UK Marketing Director Simon Hetherington said. "Following our established model range lineup, customers will enjoy a thoroughly revised interior including a new-style steering wheel and gear lever, all-red instrument illumination, a new centre console and new audio systems, plus dual-zone climate control air-conditioning."
Along with the new corporate grille, the updated Cee'd also features a new 1.6L diesel engine with a new six-speed manual transmission. Also offered for the first time is Kia's Intelligent Stop and Go system, which shuts down the engine when the car is stopped. Other features include a hill-hold system, projector headlights, and a new suspension.

Joining the Cee'd on Kia's stand will be the new Sorento, which has been heavily updated as well. Now using a spaceframe architecture instead of the old body-on-frame design of SUVs of yesteryear, the new Sorento will be easily identifiable with its corporate face, which helps reduce the drag coefficient dramatically over the old model.
Along with a revised and more spacious cabin, the new Sorento will also offer keyless entry and starting, a panoramic sunroof, and a back-up camera. The most popular engine in Europe is expected to be Kia's new 2.2L diesel, which makes 197 hp and 310 lb-ft and is mated to either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual gearbox. No word on whether we'll see this engine stateside, but don't get your hopes up. Offroaders may be disappointed to learn that the new Sorento is far more road-biased than the last model, but Kia promises it will still be a capable soft-road crawler. "With the new Kia Sorento, we have created an all-new, 'Highline Cruiser' that we believe offers buyers the benefits of an exciting all-rounder with a much broader appeal," said Panu Vainamo, general manager of marketing for Kia Motors Europe. "Kia engineers have ditched the original Sorento's body-on-frame structure and designed an all-new monocoque bodyshell - achieving a weight loss of up to 215 kg (474 lbs), greatly improving fuel economy and contributing to a more controlled ride than expected from a 4x4."
Look for the new Cee'd and Sorento in our complete coverage of the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show starting September 17.
