GM Unable to Meet Demand for Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain, and Cadillac SRX, May Restart Idled Plants

GM’s Mark Reuss recently told reporters that consumer demand for the mid-sized Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain, and Cadillac SRX crossovers is outstripping plant capacity. Reuss, the president of GM North America, informed the press at the currently in-session North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Ideally, plentiful demand would lead to the hiring of extra workers, but that is not likely to be the case just yet. According to Reuss, GM’s short-term plan is to put its plants over capacity to try and squeeze out extra vehicles, with idled plants only coming online if demand continues to hold. Reuss will be meeting with GM’s manufacturing and sales executives next week to plan future production schedules.
GM’s idled factories include facilities in Spring Hill, Tennessee and Janesville, Wisconsin, both of which manufactured SUVs or trucks in the past. Spring Hill, in particular, was tipped by Reuss as being a choice factory that was capable of building multiple models. Spring Hill formerly built Saturns, the Chevrolet Traverse, and the Cadillac Escalade, while Janesville produced medium-duty trucks and full-size SUVs.

The Theta-based Equinox and Terrain are currently built at GM’s Ingersoll plant in Ontario, Canada, while the SRX is assembled in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. The Cadillac rides on the special Theta Premium platform.

In addition to these three CUVs, demand for the Buick LaCrosse sedan has also been ample. The LaCrosse is built in Kansas City, Kansas.
