Electric Motor Cars Offer Electric Two-seat Pickups

Feb 9, 2010
Ex-Chrysler dealer Des Moines Motors, based in Des Moines, Iowa, offers an electric two-seat pickup.
Based on the Dacia Logan, the truck is sold under the Electric Motor Cars brand. The truck is reportedly capable of 260 miles on a single charge and can haul 2000 lbs of cargo. The starting price is $33,950, while a wagon version will tack on an extra $1000. A third van model is set to retail for $37,950. Power comes from nickel sodium chloride, "ZEBRA" batteries, which will charge in 3 hours on 220 volts or up to 8 hours when powered by 110 volts. EMC backs up its offering with a 36,000 mile warranty and 100,000 miles for the battery.

Dacia, a subsidiary of Renault, assembles the compact truck in Romania. There is a chance that final assembly of the EV may move to Florida soon though. The truck is based on the European Logan, which runs on gasoline and costs about a third the price of the new electric version.
EMC expects it will have 100 examples available in just over a month. There are currently only three dealers that offer the electric truck, but Des Moines Motors owner Gene Gabus plans to eventually distribute them in 28 states. The trucks are available for test-drives and advance orders, but customer deliveries are still three months out, Gabus says.
