Mercedes-Benz Adds Diesel Power to the G-Class With G350 Bluetec

The Editors of Truck TrendMar 1, 2010
The Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen (G-Class) is a highly traditional vehicle, to say the least. Little changed design-wise over its multi-decade production run, the German automaker has seen fit to update the under-skin components as necessary - further proof given by the addition of diesel power to the venerable G-Class.

Such is the case with the new G350 Bluetec, which the automaker announced this morning. The off-roader still utilizes the same 225-horsepower, 3.2-liter turbo-diesel V-6 as the outgoing G350 CDI model, but it's now coupled with Daimler's AdBlue exhaust treatment system.
As seen on the many Bluetec models offered around the world (including the ML350, GL350, and R350 in North America), the system injects an aqueous urea solution into the exhaust. Doing such releases ammonia, and the process helps convert nearly 80 percent of nitrous oxide emissions into nitrogen and water.
Seeing as Mercedes-Benz only offers the V-8-powered G550 and G55 AMG in our market, we wouldn't be surprised if the G350 -- along with its convertible and short-wheelbase hardtop forms -- to remain a European exclusive.
