Rumor: BMW Considering Expanding Lineup With X4 Sport Activity
Not long ago, BMW was seriously considering expanding what it calls its X sport activity coupe lineup, and reportedly had an X2, X4, and X7 on the drawing board. Then, gas prices shot up, the housing market collapsed, and every automaker was forced to re-evaluate its portfolio, BMW included. But with the economy on the mend and the X6 experiencing tremendous success around the world, Munich is reportedly ready to produce a vehicle with the X4 nameplate.
As the nomenclature indicates, the X4 would slot in between the X3 and X5. The X4 would likely be based on the X3 but wrapped in sheetmetal more akin to the X6 Sports Activity Coupe, essentially creating a smaller version of it. It may also draw design cues from BMW's X Coupe concept, a sporty-looking two-door 'ute that first bowed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit back in 2001.
"We haven't made any firm decision," said Autocar's BMW source. "However, the X6's success shows there is a continued demand for sporty off-roaders." We wouldn't go so far as to call the X6 an off-roader, but you get the picture.
BMW has sold 80,000 X6s around the world since its launch, double initial expectations.
