Land Rover to Sponsor Sir Steve Redgrave in The Race Across America Cycling Event
Sir Steve Redgrave, one of the United Kingdom's most famous Olympic athletes, will be sponsored and assisted by Land Rover as he embarks on The Race Across America.
Sir Redgrave is a gold-winning rower who won five consecutive Olympic games from 1984 to 2000, making him part of elite company. When he's not in a boat, Sir Redgrave is raising funds for the Steve Redgrave Fund and Sport Relief, two charities that support those in need in the U.K. and some of the world's poorest countries. These charitable efforts continue this weekend during The Race Across America cycling endurance event and Land Rover has agreed to help the gold medalist along the 3000-plus mile journey with a new LR4.
"We are pleased to have been approached by Sir Steve Redgrave to join him for such a worthy cause," said Chris Marchand, Land Rover North America's executive VP of marketing and sales.
Many miles south of Truck Trend headquarters, the Race Across the America will start June 12 at the Oceanside Pier in Oceanside, California. The eight-man teams will utilize a relay format and compete for 24 hours a day over 3000 miles to the final destination in Annapolis, Maryland. In all, the cycling teams will journey across the continental United States in six to nine days while averaging 350 to over 500 miles per day. The supplied LR4 will be used as a lead support vehicle for Sir Redgrave's team.
"This is going to be one of the toughest challenges of my life so it is important that my team and support crew have every advantage we can get," said Sir Redgrave. "The addition of the LR4 as our lead vehicle fills me with confidence. It will provide invaluable back up for not only me, but all the riders on the team. We are grateful to Land Rover North America for their help."
