Toyota Commences Tacoma Production at Texas Plant

Aug 6, 2010
The Toyota manufacturing facility in San Antonio, Texas, received a $100 million investment to promote production of the midsize Tacoma and has been able to add 1000 jobs as a result of the commitment.
In order to make room for the Tacoma, a perennial top-seller in the compact/midsize pickup truck market, the full-size Tundra consolidated its lines in Indiana. As a result of the change, the Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, as it is formally designated, gained extra funding and boosted aggregate investment to $1.4 billion. TMMTX currently employs over 2800 people.

"The San Antonio plant has shown a great deal of resilience during the recession and is fully prepared to ramp-up Tacoma production," said TMMTX president Chris Nielsen. "By building Tacoma in Texas, we are able to consolidate pickup truck production in the United States under one roof, allowing us to fully utilize the plant's capacity."
Through July, Toyota has sold 60,471 Tacomas, good to hold the fifth position on this year's list of best-selling trucks. The next closest segment competitor is the Ford Ranger at 34,868 trucks.
