One Bad Concept: Hennessey Builds Ford F-150 SVT Raptor SUV

Sure, the new 2011 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCrew does allow for a little more interior space, but if you're still jonesing for more -- along with an extra heaping of power and some armor, for that matter -- Hennessey Performance Engineering is developing the ride for you: the new VelociRaptor APV.

In a nutshell, you'll be buying the off-road SUV of your dreams. Engineering is still underway at the firm's headquarters out in Sealy, Texas, but when completed, it'll be capable of seating eight while tackling the same terrain as a stock SVT Raptor. Company founder and president John Hennessey tells us the conversion will likely involve grafting some body stampings from either an Expedition or Excursion SUV to create a new body in white. Complicated, perhaps, but Hennessey says raiding the parts bin will actually reduce the cost of engineering and performing the conversion.
Underhood, Hennessey's modifications to the Ford 6.2-liter V-8 mirror those offered in the company's VelociRaptor pickup. A naturally aspirated form can crank out 475 horsepower, but a supercharged version can produce a whopping 575 ponies. Not enough? Opt for the twin-turbo setup, which can produce between 605 and 810 horsepower, depending on the tune (and your budget).

That's all good, but Hennessey expects a number of customers to also want a nicely up-armored vehicle. In fact, he's been covertly building such vehicles on request for a number of years, but the company's new Armored Protection Vehicles division is solely dedicated to such conversions. As adding armor also adds weight, the APV group pays attention to the complete package, engineering beefed-up suspension components and adding power to compensate for the extra bulk.

Pricing for the Raptor SUV has yet to be finalized, but Hennessey tells us he expects the VelociRaptor APV will run buyers roughly $100,000, although that figure will double if you spring for the armor kit.

Not quite to your taste? No worries -- APV will be more than happy to build you the armored, 1000-horsepower Cadillac Escalade of your dreams, along with other hopped-up, up-armored versions of the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota Sequoia and Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol, and various Land Rover models. Expect the conversion to run roughly $100,000 on top of a donor vehicle's base price.
