Audi to Lead Development of Next Porsche Cayenne, New Cajun Crossover

It's no secret that the Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7 all share the same platform, but according to recent reports, Audi will be taking over development of all three next-generation vehicles.

The VW-Porsche-Audi family has recently been doing a little shuffling of roles, with Porsche having been chosen to take over development of larger luxury sedans and sports cars for the VW group. With that decision made, Porsche was released from SUV development duty - that task falling squarely on Audi's shoulders, according to Automotive News.
"This decision was made in agreement with all of the brands involved and will create synergies throughout the group to the benefit of both the brand and the customers," an Audi spokesman told Automotive News, regarding the reassignment of duties.

Meanwhile, Porsche is stressing that though Audi will spearhead development of the next-generation Cayenne (the current version is our 2011 Sport/Utility of the Year), the SUV will continue to be distinctly Porsche.
"This is not badge engineering. Porsche will be responsible for the engines and performance of the next Cayenne," a Porsche spokesman told Automotive News. "It will drive like a Porsche and perform like a Porsche."

As the SUV development chief, Audi will also be responsible for the upcoming Q5-based Porsche Cajun, a crossover vehicle designed to slot beneath the Cayenne in both size and price. Meanwhile, Porsche will lead the development of a platform that will underpin the next-generation Porsche Panamera and future Bentley models, as well as front-, rear, and mid-engined sports cars across Audi, Porsche, and Lamborghini brands. VW has taken charge of a small front-engined platform used on several VW models and the next-gen Audi A3.
The organizational changes are reportedly designed to quash VW Group arguments regarding development responsibilities.
