Jeep Introduces Diesel-Powered Grand Cherokee at Geneva Motor Show

Jeep debuted a new 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine in the Grand Cherokee at the Geneva Motor Show this week. At this point, Jeep says the diesel Grand Cherokee will be offered in Europe "and other diesel markets."

It's not clear at this point whether the U.S. is one of those other markets. Then again, Jeep did offer a diesel Grand Cherokee for the 2008 model year. Rear-wheel-drive models were rated 18/23 mpg city/highway by the EPA and four-wheel-drive models were rated 17/22 mpg.
The new 3.0-liter diesel V-6 makes 241 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Jeep says that fuel economy on the new engine is 19 percent better than the engine it replaces while CO2 emissions have been reduced by 20 percent.
As you'd expect on the latest Grand Cherokee, the diesel model is said to be quieter inside, with less vibration and harshness. With the diesel model joining the 3.6-liter V-6 and 5.7-liter V-8 variants, Jeep sales in Europe are likely to grow. Do you think the same is true for the U.S. -- would a diesel Grand Cherokee fare better in the U.S. now than it did in 2008?
