Box No More: Next Range Rover To Borrow Styling from Range Rover Evoque

Could the iconic Range Rover be losing its boxy shape? According to Autocar, the answer is yes. Look for a more stylized and sporty Range Rover to take cues from the new Range Rover Evoque to be making an appearance in the coming months.

Seeing as the current model is nearly a decade old, it’s high time for a new Range Rover, which is expected to make its debut sometime next year. The new Range Rover will move away from its iconic square, upright profile, allowing it to become sportier and more rakish. No longer will there be a straight line for the daylight opening, but a more severely raked windshield and angled roofline, which will taper towards the rear.
The next-generation Range Rover will also see a further upgrade in its cabin, with luxury trimmings befitting of its $100,000 price tag. It will share some structural components with Jaguar models, and we can expect extensive use of aluminum to help keep weight down. In fact, curb weight is expected to ring in at 4850 pounds, almost 1000 less than today’s model.

The current Range Rover debuted way back in 2002, shortly after BMW sold the Land Rover brand to Ford. The BMW-developed Range Rover carried over with its BMW-sourced 4.4-liter V-8 until 2005, when the Blue Oval gave the top-rung luxury truck a facelift, Jaguar-sourced engines, and a new supercharged trim level. In 2008, the Land Rover brand (along with Jaguar) changed hands, moving from American stewardship to Indian. Since the sale to global industry giant Tata, the Range Rover received a mild update in 2010, which included another round cosmetic updates and new engine offerings.

The new SUV will clearly be a Range Rover, as can be seen by Autocar’s spy shots, but will take on a 21st century persona. Imagine an inflated Evoque, and you have the general idea. Don’t expect to see the new Range Rover any earlier than this fall’s Frankfurt Motor Show, but more likely sometime next year ready for a 2013 model year on-sale date.
