Abt Sportsline Take on Audi Q3 Needs a Rethink
Abt Sportsline has made its name tuning Volkswagens, and later Audis and Skodas, for over half a century. While the German tuner has had plenty of success, one big miss was bound to come sooner or later, and this Abt Audi Q3 might just be that miss.
Its not the Abt Audi Q3's performance specs that do it in, they're fairly respectable, if a bit confused. Rather it's the looks. It isn't the rear or the side of the Q3 where Abts gone wrong, it's the front. It's just looks like a jack-o-lantern, or a skull, or even an angry teenager with braces - take your pick. It just looks way off, like Abt took inspiration from the slightly more awful-looking Gemballa Porsche Cayenne Tornado.
Once we see a therapist and get past the Abt Audi Q3s looks, we can look under the hood. Abt Sportsline will tune all four of the Q3's engine options. The highlight of Abt's Q3 offerings would be its tuned version of the Q3's 2.0 TSI. Stock, the 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 produces 211-hp. After Abt's tuning, it'll produce around 250-hp. Although Abt admits the final number has yet to be determined, 250 horsepower at all four wheels could prove to be quite fun. For those customers with buyer's remorse for getting the lower-horse 170-hp version of the Q3 2.0 TSI, Abt will tune the turbocharged I-4 up to 210-hp, one less than the higher spec factory Q3. Why one would opt for that package, instead of just buying the higher spec Q3 with one extra horsepower is beyond us, especially since the Abt package is likely to cost more than a stock 211-horse Q3.
Abt's other options are of the diesel variety. Abt will tune both Q3 2.0 TDI offerings. Abt's power package will bring 195-hp and an unknown, but likely substantial amount of torque out of the 170-hp 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4. The 140-hp turbodiesel mill will get a boost to 170-hp. All four engine options can be paired with all-wheel drive.
Perhaps the Abt Audi Q3's one saving grace is that it's modular; meaning one could theoretically get the power upgrades, and skip the jack-o-lantern body kit. Or one could do the reverse, although we're not quite sure why you'd want to do that to yourself, or the people that have to look at it while you're driving.
