Fiat To Build Baby Jeep In Italy; Patriot/Compass Replacement To Be Built In America

Pretty much since they debuted, the Jeep Compass and Patriot have been weak points in Jeep's lineup. Initial reports said that the sole replacement for the Compass/Patriot twins would be built at Fiat's Turin, Italy factory. However, according to Automotive News Europe the Compass/Patriot replacement will instead be built in the United States, and a new "baby" Jeep will be built in Italy.

Originally, Fiat had planned on building the single replacement for the Compass and Patriot on its CUSW chassis in its Mirafiori factory in Turin alongside a similar Alfa Romeo. Instead, Fiat will install the tools to build vehicles on the smaller SUSW architecture. The change means that the replacement Jeep will likely be built alongside a new Alfa SUV in Chrysler's Belvidere, Ill. factory.

As for the Mirafiori factory, Fiat will build a new entry level Jeep alongside a new Alfa Romeo subcompact, and the replacement for the Suzuki SX4's kissing cousin, the Fiat Sedici.
The replacement for the Jeep Compass and Patriot will likely bow in the second half of 2013, with other models (such as the replacement for the Dodge Caliber) to follow soon thereafter.
