With the state the economy is in, it makes sense for automakers to appeal to businesses and municipalities who're looking for cost savings. In an effort to win buyers in these tough times, Ford today announced that it'll be making its 6.8-liter V-10 available in the medium-duty F-650 Super Duty truck, making it the sole medium-duty truck with a gas engine option.

Ford is planning on offering the 362-hp 6.8-liter V-10 as an optional engine in the F-650 to appeal to commercial customers who may be facing budget cuts in tough times. Bolted to a six-speed automatic transmission with dual-overdrive, Ford says that buyers won't be sacrificing comfort of fuel economy by opting for a gas engine over a turbodiesel mill. The gas engine cranks out 457 lb-ft of peak torque.
Ford also says that by opting for the 6.8-liter V-10 that buyers will be saving an average of $8300, likely in up-front costs, considering that over the life of the vehicle, the buyer could theoretically save more money by opting for a more fuel efficient diesel engine. When equipped with the 6.8-liter V-10, the cheapest F-650 is the $54,840 F-650 6.8-liter Pro-Loader with 19.5-in wheels.

Would you go for the cost savings up front with the gas V-10, or would you save in the long run with a diesel mill?
