World Rally Champion Ernest Loidl Schools Discovery Adventurers on Winter Driving
8000-Mile Journey to Raise Money for Red Cross Stops in Austria
Along the 8000-mile journey from Birmingham, England to Beijing China, the chaps driving the Land Rover Discovery on this epic journey made a stop in Salzburg, Austria to get some pointers from World Rally Championship driver Ernest Loidl on how to safely drive vehicles in snow and icy conditions.
Despite the addition of all the modern traction and driver-control aids, there's no substitute for an alert, relaxed, in-control driver, according to Loidl. "The first thing to focus on in any driving situation is the driver. You must be alert, relaxed, looking as far ahead as possible, and ready to react. If the driver is not paying attention, then you are in trouble before you begin."
The Journey of Discovery commemorates the production of the millionth Discovery model (now sold as the LR4 in the U.S.). Its journey from Birmingham to Beijing is projected to take 50 days, and will raise 1 million British pounds for the International Red Cross/Red Crescent. Proceeds will go toward the organization's construction of a water sanitation project in Uganda.
