Scion Set to Euthanize xB, XD - Could a Pickup Fill the Gap?

Brand VP Says Pickup Still Being Studied, a 'Hole in the Industry'

Declining sales and a lukewarm reception to the larger, heavier second-generation xB is prompting Scion to discontinue the xB and companion xD hatches from the brand's lineup for 2013. The unexpectedly strong sales of the Kia Soul, which outsold the xB by a ratio of nearly six-to-one, also sealed the fate of the original compact box car.

Scion is hoping to recapture interest and enthusiasm with new models like the recently launched rear- drive FR-S sports coupe. But one model hinted at more than two years ago could still potentially see the showroom floor. The model in question is a pickup-type vehicle.
According to a report from WardsAuto, Scion brand vice president Jack Hollis said the brand is looking at an untapped market segment, as was the case with the first-generation xB, and believes a small, affordable pickup-type vehicle could be it.

Although some believe the Toyota A-BAT concept could foreshadow what a Scion truck might look like, the Scion truck, if produced, would likely be non-hybrid, to keep costs down. Whether or not it would be a conventional body-on-frame rear-drive pickup, or a front-drive unibody chassis is unclear, but Hollis made it clear Scion's entry would not be a direct competitor in size or price to the Tacoma.
