Recalled: 2012-2013 BMW X5, X6 for Defective Steering Gear Could Cause Leak, Fire

Jun 20, 2012
BMW is issuing recalling 2012 X5 xDrive35d SUVs along with all 2013 model-year X5 and X6 models for an incorrectly-machined steering gear that could cause a power steering fluid leak, which could potentially lead to a fire in the engine compartment.

The Problem: A machining error during the manufacturing process of the steering gears could cause power steering fluid to leak onto exhaust system components, which could result in a fire in the engine compartment of the affected vehicles.
The Fix: BMW will notify owners and dealers will inspect and replace the steering gear if necessary. The recall campaign will begin in July. Owners can contact BMW Customer Relations at 800-525-7417 or NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
