Ricardo Gives Pinzgauer New Lease On Life

New Program Rebuilds Legendary Off-Roader with New Components

Edward A. SanchezJun 21, 2012
Sometimes when a vehicle serves so faithfully through the thick and thin of any abusive situation we can put it through, it's hard to let go. Such is the case with the Pinzgauer, the legendary off-road vehicle that ranks up there with the Mercedes-Benz Unimog and AM General Humvee as one of the all-time off-road greats.

Although it can trace its origins to Austria, the Pinzgauer became a staple of the British and NATO military fleets. But with many models dating back to the 1980s and '90s, and many having served in the punishing conditions of Iraq and Afghanistan, it seemed like this trusty companion of the British armed forces was destined for the scrap pile.
But British Automotive component supplier Ricardo just announced a two-tier restoration program that can extend the service life of a Pinzgauer by another 10-15 years, or a more comprehensive rebuild that basically gives customers an all-new vehicle. Among the enhancements that are part of the program are increased engine performance, an upgraded alternator, an increased cab size with new seats, a repositioned steering column and pedal box for greater driver comfort, increased load capacity, and a mechanical overhaul of the suspension, chassis, engine, transmission, driveline, and electrical systems.

The more comprehensive refresh gives the option of an all-new engine, a new auxiliary power unit bumping power from 120 to 270 amps or an integrated starter generator going from 300 to 400 amps, and improved ballistics protection.
