2013 BMW X1 Configurator Goes Live, Starts at $31,545
BMW's Smallest and Sportiest SUV is Also Its Most Affordable
At one time, BMW was synonymous with the 3 Series, but that all changed with the launch of the X5 in 1999. Today, you're as likely to see an X3 or X5 on the road and that proliferation of X models will grow further still in 2013 with the introduction of the X1. We've known about the X1 for a while, but a change in plans going from a naturally-aspirated I-6 to BMW's new 240-hp TwinPower 2.0-liter direct-injected turbocharged I-4 as the base engine along with strong demand in Europe delayed its U.S. debut.
With a surprisingly low starting price, the X1 has the potential to be a hit. Including an $895 destination charge, the rear-drive X1 sDrive28i model starts at just $31,545, but as is typical for German cars, there are numerous package and a la carte options that can drive the price up considerably. The sDrive28i comes standard with automatic climate control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, one-touch power up/down front windows, HD Radio, and Bluetooth hands-free calling.
Stepping up to the X1 xDrive28i (BMW-speak for all-wheel drive) adds $1700 to the total, although the online configurator was forcing us to select the xLine package, which includes 18-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels, Dark Copper high-gloss interior trim, and Black Leatherette, which also adds another $1900 to the total. Even with that, you're still out the door for a fairly reasonable $35,145.
Should you want to make your wallet beg for mercy, fear not, BMW is happy to oblige. Clicking every box we could on the top-of-the-line turbocharged six-cylinder X1 xDrive35i, we were able to get the total up to $49,370 for a fully kitted-out M Sport Line model with the Ultimate package. Considering that most German cars crest the $50k mark just by looking at them, that total is not too outrageous.
