2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee rollover in a moose test evaluation
When Swedish magazine Teknikens Varld tested the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee in a moose test evaluateing rollover potential, the SUV rolled on two wheels through a slalom on one test run. Chrysler, however, called the test "invalid" and did its own investigation to prove the SUV is not a high rollover risk.
During the moose test shown in the video below, a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee swerved through some cones at a moderate speed, in which it dangerously tilted onto two wheels. Chrysler released a statement saying its engineers attempted to replicate the event with a properly loaded vehicle several times, but couldn't get the SUV to perform the way it did in the initial test. The magazine was also given a chance to replicate the event with Chrysler engineers there to witness it. Three vehicles ran on a course prepared by the magazine 11 times, and none of them wobbled on two wheels.
Chrysler claims Teknikens Varld performed its initial test with a vehicle loaded beyond its weight capacity, which increased the risk for a rollover. In addition, the automaker states in a press release, "the extreme maneuver performed by the magazine is not certified by any regulatory agency, nor is it used to establish any sanctioned safety ratings."
Meanwhile, the Swedish magazine has an updated story on its website. "When we performed the moose test with Chrysler/Fiat present, the tires were pried off the rims." The magazine says that happened seven times. In the U.S., the Jeep Grand Cherokee has a four-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (out of a possible five stars) with three stars in the rollover test for rear-drive models and four stars for four-wheel-drive models.
