Production of 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Begins in Illinois

Mitsubishi's Strongest U.S. Seller Destined for Export

Jul 18, 2012
The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport was revealed at the 2012 New York Auto Show featuring a number of styling and functional enhancements, but the biggest news wasn't mechanical. The biggest news was that production of the popular compact crossover is moving from Japan to Mitsubishi's plant in Normal, Illinois. Production of the Outlander Sport begins today at the company's U.S. plant.
The initial output goal for the plant is 50,000 units, with an eventual target of 70,000. Mitsubishi plans to export approximately half of production to markets outside of North America.

The Normal plant was once home to the Diamond-Star alliance with Chrysler, which produced the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Plymouth Laser, and Eagle Talon. The plant also has produced the Dodge Stratus and Avenger Coupe and Chrysler Sebring Coupe models, and currently manufactures the Mitsubishi Endeavor midsize SUV and Galant midsize sedan. At its peak, the Normal plant produced more than 220,000 vehicles in 2000.
