Chrysler Fixing Small Number of Pentastar V-6 Cylinder Heads

Customers Report Ticking Noise, Stalling

Aug 14, 2012
According to a report from Automotive News, Chrysler is addressing drivability issues on a small number of Pentastar V-6s that are believed to stem from faulty cylinder heads. Due to the small number of complaints relative to the 1.5 million Pentastar engines that have been produced, Chrysler officials believe the problem is not an inherent design issue but rather stems from a specific set of circumstances encountered by a handful of customers, including low-quality fuel and certain driving conditions.

The company has not yet issued a full-fledged recall but is working hard to address the issue in customers' cars. A recent supply shortage of replacement heads has delayed the repair process, resulting in approximately 1300 cars across the country waiting in service bays for parts. The supply shortage has been resolved and Chrysler is addressing the issue as quickly as possible.
However, the average weekly repair request rate from customers has gone up to 500 a week, indicating this could be a larger issue than originally thought. Customers have reported a ticking sound from the left-side cylinder head as well as and stalling, which triggers the check engine light on the dashboard. The issue has been most common on the Jeep Wrangler but has also been reported on the Dodge Journey, Dodge Grand Caravan, and Chrysler Town & Country.

All vehicles being brought in with complaints about the issue are being repaired under warranty by Chrysler.
