2014 Mazda CX-5 May Get 2.5-Liter, Diesel Options

Engines Response to Critics Citing Lack of Power

Aug 28, 2012
Automotive News is reporting that just a year after its introduction, there may be some powertrain changes in store for the Mazda CX-5 compact crossover. The CUV was introduced with a 2.0-liter version of the company's Skyactiv I-4 which has been well-reviewed though a lack of power has been cited as a glaring shortcoming. To remedy the situation, the company is reportedly preparing a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine to supplement the powertrain lineup to improve performance. The larger gasoline engine is expected to be available in the first quarter of calendar 2013.

The CX-5 is available in global markets with Mazda's Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter turbodiesel I-4 that produces approximately 170 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. U.S. journalists that have driven the CX-5 with this engine have cited its strong torque and free-revving character. The Skyactiv-D is projected to deliver even better fuel economy than the already frugal gasoline direct-injection 2.0L Skyactiv engine. However, according to inside sources, the diesel is expected to debut first in the new Mazda6 midsize sedan, with availability in the CX-5 coming some time thereafter.
