Buick Encore Claims Title of Most Fuel-Efficient Domestic Crossover

Compact Crossover Rated at 25 MPG City, 33 MPG Highway

Aug 28, 2012
Today, Buick announced the EPA ratings for its upcoming Encore compact crossover. The federal agency has rated the front-wheel drive Encore at 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway for a combined 28 mpg rating. Buick is claiming that this makes the Encore the most fuel-efficient domestic-branded crossover, better than the 2013 Ford Escape, which achieves 23 city and 33 highway equipped with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine.

Buick also selectively cited a few of the Encore's target foreign competitors: the Mini Countryman S, which is rated at 25/32 mpg, and the Volkswagen Tiguan, which achieves 21/26 with an automatic transmission. Buick points to the Encore's extensive use of high-strength steel as key to the Encore's competitive fuel economy ratings.

However, it is worth noting that the Encore's power output is lower than some of the competitors cited. Its turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces 140 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque whereas the Escape's 1.6-liter turbo-four produces 178 hp and 184 lb-ft and the VW Tiguan's 2.0-liter turbo-four produces 200 hp and 207 lb-ft.
