Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Has 547-Mile Range, Can Drive 34 Miles in EV Mode
Mitsubishi has released more info on the Outlander PHEV leading up to its 2012 Paris Motor Show debut. The plug-in hybrid crossover will arrive first in Japan by early 2013, and land in Europe, North America, and other markets shortly after.
As we previously reported, the Outlander PHEV has been previewed through the various PX-MiEV concepts shown over the years. Now, the production model will take the stage in Paris sporting an internal combustion engine paired with two electric motors. The Outlander PHEV will be powered by a 2.0-liter I-4 that can act as a generator or traction motor, depending on the driving mode. At each axle is a permanent magnet synchronous motor, producing 80 hp and 101 lb-ft of torque in the front, and 80 hp and 144 lb-ft in the rear. The battery pack is a 12-kWh lithium-ion unit, which provides a range of around 34 miles in EV Drive Mode. Mitsubishi estimates total combined vehicle range to be about 547 miles – beating the roughly 500-mile range of the PX-MiEV II concept.
The Outlander PHEV can run on all-electric power, combined gasoline and electric power, or run the gasoline engine as a generator to supply the electric motors with juice. A Twin Motor 4WD system works in conjunction with Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) to drive all four wheels and deliver on-road stability and immediate torque to the wheel with most grip in off-road conditions.

When plugged into a CHAdeMO-spec DC quick-charger, the Outlander PHEV can charge to 80 percent in roughly 30 minutes. Drivers can also select Battery Charge Mode, which switches the gas engine to a generator on demand. Compared to the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander in U.S. showrooms, the Outlander PHEV is projected to be less than half an inch shorter and identical in width and height.
