Recall: 2001-2004 Toyota Tacoma for Rust-Prone Spare Tire Retainer

Edward A. SanchezNov 28, 2012
Toyota is recalling 150,000 2001-2004 Tacoma pickups for a spare tire retainer that may not have received sufficient corrosion protection. In cold-weather states that get roads salted frequently, the corrosive road spray could weaken the carrier and cause the spare tire to drop from the carrier, potentially causing a road hazard for other drivers.

The Problem: Tacomas originally sold or registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia are subject to the recall. The spare-tire lift plate on affected vehicles may not have received sufficient rustproofing, resulting in deterioration of the integrity of the lift plate over time with exposure to road spray in areas that use road salt.
