2014 Mitsubishi Outlander, 2013 Outlander Sport Limited Edition Unveiled at LA Auto Show
Can New SUVs Reverse Mitsubishi's Flagging Fortunes?
With the Outlander Sport receiving a comprehensive makeover for the 2013 model year, Mitsubishi focused its attention on the larger Outlander. The new crossover, unveiled at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, features a sleeker and more conservative look than its little brother. Mitsubishi hopes that the Outlander will appeal to families seeking seven-passenger practicality and versatility -- and help lift sagging sales
Under the hood, the 2014 Outlander will continue to offer a V-6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic in the top-line GT model. The standard engine on the Outlander will be a 2.0-liter four-cylinder -- likely the same mill found in the Outlander Sport -- mated to a continuously-variable automatic that Mitsubishi claims will offer class-leading fuel economy among seven-passenger SUVs.
Other optional features highlighted on the 2014 Outlander include an available navigation headunit with a 710-watt Rockford-Fosgate audio system, power-assisted liftgate, lane departure warning system, adaptive cruise control, and a forward collision mitigation system. All-wheel-drive models will feature the latest generation of Mitsubishi's Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system.
Eventually, it will be joined by the Outlander PHEV. First announced at the 2012 Paris Auto Show, the plug-in hybrid is due in U.S. dealerships in early 2014. The Outlander PHEV will feature an innovative hybrid drivetrain that can operate in pure EV, parallel and series hybrid modes, and will have front and rear-mounted electric motors.
Rounding out the Mitsubishi's SUV news at the L.A. Show was the debut of the 2013 Outlander Sport Limited Edition, which features blackout side mirrors, wheel arch trim, front center bumper, and argent alloy wheels. Inside, the Limited Edition gets available two-tone Dove Grey and Black leather seating surfaces with a standard power driver's seat. Limited Edition exterior badging will signify the new model.
