Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI vs. Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD - Who Wins?

Edward A. SanchezJan 2, 2013
At first glance, it may seem obvious who will prevail in this battle. The giant, Duramax-powered, 7500-plus-pound Silverado versus the much smaller TDI-powered VW Touareg. Add the imposing exhaust stacks and lift kit on the Silverado, and it looks like this battle will be a massacre.
But not so fast. As we've often seen, over-the-top aftermarket modifications and visual flair don't always equal performance. And although the Touareg looks like a modest, midsize SUV, this particular example is packing VW's deceptively powerful 5.0-liter V10 TDI. That engine produced a healthy 313 hp, but more important, a stout 553 lb-ft of torque. That is in fact, more than the first-generation LB7 6.6-liter Duramax, which produced "only" 300 hp and 520 lb-ft of torque.

Judging by the styling, this Silverado HD is between a 2007 and 2011 model, meaning it either has the LMM or LML version of the Duramax, giving the engine an unmodified output of between 365-397 hp and 660-765 lb-ft of torque. There's a good chance the truck has a chip tune on it, but we don't know for sure.
However, it seems the Silverado driver's fatal flaw is not engaging four-wheel drive soon enough, or correctly. Once the tug-of-war gets underway, the Touareg hunkers down with its all-wheel drive and pulls confidently, whereas the Silverado spins its rear tires.

So what do you say? Did the VW win this one fair and square, or should the Chevy demand a rematch?
