Official: 2014 Jeep Cherokee Midsize SUV Revealed Before New York Debut

Cherokee Name Replaces Liberty

Zach GaleFeb 22, 2013
Jeep has pulled the sheets off the Cherokee well in advance of its New York auto show debut. The 2014 Jeep Cherokee replaces the Liberty midsize SUV and, finally, the U.S.-spec version's badges will match those of the European model. The 2014 Jeep Cherokee will hit dealer showrooms in the third quarter of this year and be built in Toledo, Ohio.

We expect the 2014 Cherokee to offer a 3.2-liter V-6 -- a downsized version of the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 in a number of Chrysler products -- along with an available ZF-sourced nine-speed automatic transmission. At this point, it's unclear just how off-road ready the new Cherokee will be, but Jeep does point out the new SUV is more than 45-percent more efficient than the Liberty.
The Liberty actually sold respectably in calendar-year 2012, with sales of 75,483 units. With the 2014 Cherokee picking up where the likely more rugged Liberty left off, don't be surprised to see a lot more of the controversially styled Cherokee than its predecessor.
