Ford Debuts Euro-Spec EcoSport at Mobile World Congress

Tech Conference Chosen for Sync AppLink Intro to European Market

Feb 25, 2013
This isn't the first time we've seen or heard about the Ford EcoSport. The pint-size, Fiesta-based SUV was developed specifically for emerging markets, and is a key part of the brand's lineup in Brazil, India, China, and Russia. But as we reported last April, the EcoSport will also be sold in Europe. To showcase its B-class SUV to European customers, Ford chose the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Although vehicle debuts at technology shows are not common, with their increasing integration of electronics, it makes sense to show new cars at a technology-oriented conference.

The centerpiece of the EcoSport's technology suite is Sync AppLink, which integrates apps installed on mobile phones with the vehicle's multimedia display. The EcoSport also features Sync emergency assistance, which connects the vehicle directly to emergency responders by sending GPS coordinates, and automatically sending a voice introduction in the appropriate language based on the vehicle's location, a key feature in multilingual Europe.
Although much ado was made about the availability of Ford's 125-hp, three-cylinder, 1.0-liter EcoBoost in the EcoSport, the European model will get two other engine options in addition to the turbo three-pot. A 110-hp 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gas and 90-hp turbodiesel 1.5-liter four-cylinder will also be offered.
