Liquid Gold: Range Rover Autobiography Custom Paint Costs $14,500
Custom Colors Require Separate Paint Process, Tastefulness Optional
As we saw with Snooki's hide-bound Escalade getting close to $80,000 on eBay, high-dollar doesn't always necessarily correlate to high taste. But when you're paying the bill, who is anyone else to tell you what's tasteful or not? Certainly not Range Rover, which will apply a bespoke paint job to your Range Rover Autobiography for the sum of $14,500. That's more than the starting price of a Nissan Versa, Chevrolet Spark, Ford Fiesta, or Toyota Yaris. But when you're already scribbling checks to the tune of $130,995 for the Autobiography edition itself, what's another five figures?
The colors cover the spectrum, literally from understated to outlandish and just about every degree in between. In all, 22 color options are available, with traditional hues such as Roma Red and British Racing Green to the color-shifting Spectral Lime and Spectral Blue. The color-shifting paint schemes are nothing new, having been done by custom painters for years, and making its production debut on the 2004 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra with the Mystichrome paint option.
Land Rover says only 5 to 6 percent of Autobiography customers pop for the pricey paint option, but of those who do, Valloire White Pearl is the most popular color. Part of the reason the price is so high on the non-standard colors is that they're applied in a separate paint shop off the main assembly line, and the paint booth and sprayers have to be set up each time a different color is ordered. We're all for individuality and style, but at the price of a gently used 2006 Ford F-150? We're not so sure.
