Next Lincoln Navigator Could Go All V-6

Ford Expedition Could Have V-6, V-8 Options

Mar 12, 2013
Since the debut of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 in the F-150 in 2011, many have been wondering and asking how long it would be until Dearborn's fullsize SUV twins, the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, would get the same powertrain options as their pickup kin.

According to Lincoln global director Matt VanDyke, that answer could come sooner than later. The next-gen Expedition and Navigator are slated to go on a major weight-loss program, which brings up another interesting development, the offering of Ford's 3.7-liter naturally-aspirated V-6 as a base engine for the Expedition and Navigator.
Ironically, the Expedition could retain a V-8 option even as the Navigator drops it. Motor Trend associate editor Scott Evans says the Expedition's more traditional buyer demographic may prefer V-8 power over a turbocharged V-6. The natural candidate would be the 5.0-liter DOHC V-8 from the F-150.

An all-V-6 Navigator lineup stands as an interesting counterpoint to the next-generation Cadillac Escalade, which it's believed will carry a direct-injected 6.2-liter V-8 closely related to the Corvette Stingray's LT1. GM has its own twin-turbocharged V-6 under development for various applications, possibly including trucks and SUVs, but at least initially, the Escalade lineup is expected to remain all-V-8.
