Euro-only Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Camper Channels Vanagon

Compact Euro Camper Recalls Vanagon Models of 1980s

Mar 26, 2013
If you're a child of the 1980s or 1990s and lived near the California coast, you probably recall seeing or even knowing someone that owned a Volkswagen Vanagon. The modern update of the iconic Microbus was offered in a variety of different configurations, including a camper. That tradition was continued with the early '90s EuroVan. But once the EuroVan faded out of the picture, VW's U.S. van lineup consisted of a rebadged Chrysler minivan, which, while respectable for what it was, didn't have the same character and unique personality of its authentically German forebears.

Ironically enough, VW is selling a "California Beach" edition of its new Caddy Maxi Camper in Europe, which includes such cool features as a fold-out double bed, deck chairs, a portable table, an electric cooler box, and a pop-up rear tent attachment to fit vacationers' leisure needs.

When more practical day-to-day needs are in order, the accessories can be removed, giving a generous 113 cubic feet of cargo space, with a nearly 6-foot long load space. Compared with its rear-engine Type 3 predecessor, the Caddy Maxi Camper is 10 inches longer and 10 inches lower with its pop-up roof. The Caddy camper is available with a choice of TDI turbodiesel four-cylinder engines, a 100-hp, 1.6-liter or 138-hp, 2.0-liter with an optional dual-clutch automated transmission.
