Mitsubishi Previews Outlander PHEV At New York
Makes North American Debut
At the 2013 New York Auto Show, Mitsubishi unveiled a full-scale cutaway model of its Outlander PHEV. Mitsubishi expects this energy-efficient and eco-friendly plug-in hybrid electric vehicle to go on sale in 2014. The PHEV's powertrain uses a pair of 60 kW (80-bhp) electric motors, which have been reconfigured for the Outlander, a lithium-ion drive battery pack, and a fuel-efficient gas engine.
All 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEVs will come standard with Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drive. This helps take advantage of the vehicle's primary motive force through the use of the front and rear electric motors, making the system a 100% electric-powered, EV-based full-time all-wheel drive. These motors produce instant power, ensuring more precise control of the 4WD, because this configuration doesn't need a propeller shaft, clutch plate or hydraulic system to connect the front and rear axles; those are all needed in a conventional internal combustion engine/hydraulic-powered 4WD system. This use of the twin electric motors and S-AWC also allows excellent off-the-line acceleration, because of the torque of the electric motors.
