2007-2008 Jeep Liberty, Dodge Nitro Recalled for Heat Shield

Other Smaller Recalls Also Issued for 2013 Ram 1500, HD

Apr 10, 2013
Chrysler released a trio of recalls involving trucks and SUVs today, with the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro composing the bulk of the recalls on a unit basis. A heat shield on the Liberty and Nitro can come loose and contact the driveshaft, causing premature wear and possible failure. The other recalls involve the 2013 Ram HD for a defective plastic engine cover, and the 2013 Ram 1500 for an issue with its parking brake.

The Problem: The driveshaft tunnel heat shield on 2007-2008 two-wheel-drive Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro models could come loose and contact the driveshaft. Prolonged contact between the heat shield and driveshaft could cause premature wear and possible driveshaft failure. For 2013 Ram HD models, the plastic engine cover on models equipped with the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine showed insufficient heat resistance. Most of the 7000 models are unsold, and are being repaired before delivery to customers. Finally, 9300 Ram 1500 trucks are being recalled for parking brakes that are not in compliance with mandatory safety standards.
The Fix: Affected owners can contact Jeep at 877-426-5337, Ram owners can call 800-423-6343, or call NHTSA's vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236.

Number of Units Affected: 78,500 2007-2008 Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro two-wheel-drive models. Approximately 61,400 of the affected units were sold in the U.S. 9300 2013 Ram 1500 models built between December 17, 2012, and January 22, 2013. Approximately 6600 affected Ram 1500 models are in the U.S., while 7000 2013 Ram HDs are subject to the engine cover recall, and 500 have been sold to customers in the U.S. The rest are in dealer inventory.
