Audi Ultra-Lux SUV Above Q7 Could Be Coming
Durheimer Sees Room Above Current SUV Flagship
The Audi Q7 currently sits atop the brand's SUV hierarchy, but it might not rule the roost for long. In an interview with Britain's AutoExpress, Wolfgang Durheimer said the brand could offer a bigger or more luxurious SUV than the Q7.
Durheimer even cited Volkswagen corporate stablemate Bentley as a possible benchmark, or even rival, saying he wouldn't mind "giving them a challenge." With a fully loaded Q7 currently going for around $91,000 in Europe, an ultra-premium SUV could go well into the six-figures, an area currently dominated by Land Rover's Range Rover, which retails for more than $130,000 in top-spec Autobiography trim.
Inter-brand competition is "healthy," Durheimer said, and added that, if the designs do well in customer clinics and the business case adds up, he doesn't see anything wrong with competing products across VWAG's family of brands. With VW Group products sharing components, chassis, and drivetrains, the new topline Audi could even conceivably share its chassis with the Bentley SUV.
Durheimer said he is also lobbying strongly to bring a production version of the Lamborghini Urus SUV concept to market.
