2013 Toyota RAV4 Gets IIHS Top Safety Pick Designation
Small Overlap Test on new TSP+ Not Included
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has just released the crash test results on the newly-redesigned 2013 Toyota RAV4. The compact crossover received a Top Safety Pick rating by the private insurance industry organization, but did not receive the Top Safety Pick + designation which adds the small overlap frontal test. The only SUVs that have been tested and received the + rating so far is the Volvo XC60, and the wagon-like Subaru Outback.
The RAV4 joins the rest of its peers in the compact SUV category with the Top Safety Pick designation. Almost every vehicle sold in that category received a Top Safety Pick rating, including the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and Subaru Forester. The 2006-2012 RAV4 also received the Top Safety Pick designation. The 2013 model improved in the category of head and neck safety from "Acceptable" to "Good" the highest rating given by the agency.
As vehicles are redesigned, more will be subjected to the enhanced testing protocol, which includes the small front overlap test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not yet released its ratings for the 2013 RAV4. The 2012 RAV4 received a four-star overall rating, and five stars in the side crash rating in NHTSA testing.
