2013 Ram 1500 RWD V-8, Eight-Speed MPG Revealed
Fuel Economy Ties Best in Class, for Now
A source at Ram Truck told us that the fuel-economy numbers for the 2013 Ram 1500 HFE, which comes equipped with rear drive, the 5.7-liter V-8, and the eight-speed automatic, have finally been released. If you recall, the EPA officially released the fuel economy numbers for the 4WD Ram 1500 with the Hemi and eight-speed a little more than a month ago, and since then we have been eagerly awaiting the 2WD numbers. So here they are: The truck will achieve 15 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg combined. Those numbers aren't listed on the EPA's website yet, but according to the source at Ram Truck, they are final.
With this announcement, the fuel-economy wars get tougher -- and more interesting. This Ram 1500 HFE's highway mpg number ties that of the highway number of the EcoBoost-equipped F-150. However, that same Ford's city fuel economy is still one mpg better, 16 mpg to the Ram HFE V-8's 15 mpg in the city, and the Ford's combined fuel economy is still better as well, at 18 mpg compared with the Ram's 17. Yet there is another factor here -- the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, which GM estimates will achieve 16 mpg city and 23 highway with rear-drive trucks with the 5.3-liter engine. If that is the official number, the GM siblings will have the best V-8 (and V-8 alternative) highway number, and would be tied with the EcoBoost F-150 for the best city number. And we're sure the race for fuel economy champ will get even tighter in the next couple years.
