Which Bank-Bleeding SUV Is Best?

Edward A. SanchezMay 8, 2013
Motor Trend's Jonny Lieberman is at it again, this time comparing two icons of the well-heeled worldwide, the Land Rover Range Rover and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. First off, Jonny takes the G-Wagen off-road. Although legendary for its off-road capability, the G63 AMG is not without its shortcomings.
Lieberman notes the G-Wagen's cumbersome turning radius, which sometimes necessitates backing up when negotiating tight, technical off-road turns. The cool-looking and burly-sounding low-hanging side pipes are also vulnerable to rock rash. The G-Wagen is definitely not lacking in off-road bells and whistles, with front, center, and rear locking differentials. And although its slab-sided styling and imposing height suggest a large size, its 35-year-old design is actually narrower than many more modern SUVs, which gives it an advantage on sometimes narrow off-road trails.

The 2013 Range Rover is a radical contrast to the G-Wagen's tried-and-true body-on-frame, solid axle chassis. Unibody, aluminum, and independently suspended, the Range Rover is a thoroughly modern approach to upscale off-roading. Its wider body makes it more suitable for a long trip, with ample comfort and convenience features, including heated and cooled seats with massage. Unlike the Mercedes triple-locking differentials, the Range Rover uses its considerable computer power to manage and distribute power off-road. However, unlike many other luxury SUVs that have abandoned it, the Range Rover retains a low-range transfer case.
