Recalls: Jeep Grand Cherokee Transmission Software, Wrangler Dust Shields, Ram Defoggers

Transmission Recall Significant, Wrangler, Ram Recalls Small

Edward A. SanchezMay 13, 2013
Chrysler is conducting a massive worldwide recall of more than 400,000 2005-2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commander models to correct an issue with the transmission circuit boards that could allow inadvertent shifts to neutral. The company will reprogram the software to prevent the issue going forward.
The company also issued smaller recalls for dust shields on right-hand-drive Jeep Wranglers used primarily in rural mail delivery that could prevent the driver-side airbag from functioning correctly. Finally, 532 Ram 1500 models are subject to a recall for an issue with their cooling systems that could compromise function of the windshield defogging.

The Problem: The circuit boards on the affected Grand Cherokee and Commander models may transmit compromised signals that could enable inadvertent shifts to neutral. Right-hand-drive Wranglers used for rural mail delivery experienced dust buildup on an electrical connector mounted on the steering column which could cause circuit fatigue and airbag failure. Some Ram 1500 models may have had some corrosion of the cooling system which could affect windshield defogging performance.
The Fix: Chrysler will notify affected owners, and repair the respective issues free of charge. Owners can call Chrysler directly at 800/853-1403, or NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888/327-4236.
