Lawsuit Alleges Defects with Ford EcoBoost V-6

Plaintiffs Include F-150, Taurus SHO Owners

May 15, 2013
Automotive media and consumer reviews of Ford's 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 have been generally favorable, praising its robust torque output and powerful acceleration in Ford's cars and trucks. But for a few Ford owners in Ohio, the ownership and driving experience has not been quite as superlative. Three plaintiffs have filed suit against Ford for allegedly failing to disclose to consumers known design and engineering issues that can cause driveability issues with the engine, Automotive News reports.

Two of the plaintiffs own a 2010 Taurus SHO, and one owns an F-150 pickup. In both installations, moisture can reportedly build up in the intercooler, which is then ingested into the intake stream under boost, causing power loss and misfires at highway speeds. The suit claims the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received approximately 100 other similar complaints from owners, and claims Ford has known about the issue, as evidenced by a series of technical service bulletin issued to dealers with suggestions how to fix the issue.

Ford declined comment on the issue since it has not officially reviewed the lawsuit. NHTSA has also not yet opened an investigation into the matter. The three and four-cylinder EcoBoost engines are not included in the lawsuit.
